Universal Basic Income: A Solution for AI-Induced Job Displacement?

As artificial intelligence and robotics continue to automate jobs across various sectors, policymakers and economists are exploring potential solutions to address technological unemployment. One idea gaining traction is Universal Basic Income (UBI), a system where all citizens receive a standard amount of money regardless of their employment status.

Alexander Mann's paper "Adaptive Equilibrium in the Age of Artificial Intelligence" (LINK) examines several UBI trials, providing insights into this potential solution. One notable example is Finland's 2017 UBI experiment.

Mann reports, "In 2017, Finland implemented a UBI trial where 2,000 unemployed citizens received €560 per month for two years. The trial was designed to evaluate whether unconditional cash payments could improve mental well-being and incentivize job-seeking."

The results of this trial were intriguing. According to Mann, "Although the UBI trial did not lead to significant employment gains, recipients reported improved mental health, reduced stress, and greater financial stability, demonstrating the potential of UBI to mitigate some social impacts of AI-driven unemployment."

These findings suggest that while UBI may not be a silver bullet for job displacement, it could play a crucial role in maintaining social stability during periods of rapid technological change. As Mann notes, "UBI could act as a buffer, allowing displaced workers to reskill for AI-adjacent roles, ultimately fostering economic resilience in an era of automation."

However, implementing UBI on a large scale presents significant challenges, including funding and potential impacts on work incentives. As AI continues to reshape our economy, the debate around UBI is likely to intensify, making it a critical area for further research and policy discussion.
